The Latinx Choral Project
The Latinx Choral Project is a vibrant fiesta of music, birthed and guided by the illustrious Lynn Mendoza-Khan for Latino/a/x/e creatives. Our mission centers on uniting with local Latinx artists to create a rich tapestry woven with friendship, creativity, cultural pride, and an electrifying sense of purpose.
Under the adept direction of Lynn Mendoza-Khan, a full-fledged Community Choir, with over 50 enthusiastic singers, gathers every Monday night at the Community Music Center. We delivered dozens of enchanting performances in no time, accompanied by more encore requests than we ever imagined! We eagerly roll out the welcome mat for new Latino/a/x/e singers, inviting them to join us for evenings brimming with song and the magic of friendship. Our organizational structure is based on a matriarchal structure.
Organizational Model, Leadership & Community Impact
The Latinx Choral Project operates through an innovative matriarchal leadership model that centers shared power, relational accountability, and long-term sustainability. Rather than relying on a traditional hierarchical structure, the organization functions as a hub-and-network system. The Executive/Artistic Director and Executive Board serve as the central core—stewarding vision, financial health, and strategic direction—while leadership, decision-making, and implementation are distributed across leadership circles, or casitas. Like a heart, that circulates a flow in and out as a pump. The Executive team stewards a shared vision with resources while also recieving feedback and ways the Executive team can identify resources needed in this work. Relational instead of hierarchical.
Each participant is invited to step into leadership roles within a casita aligned with their strengths, including outreach, communications, operations, and member care. Leadership development is embedded in our structure: participants step into roles that align with their natural strengths and are supported in expanding those skills through practice, collaboration, and peer mentorship. This asset-based approach increases confidence, builds transferable skills, and strengthens long-term leadership capacity within the community. As a result, the organization demonstrates strong participant retention, leadership development, and operational resilience, while actively reducing burnout.
Since piloting this model in 2023 and fully assuming independent leadership in 2025, the Latinx Choral Project has engaged 50+ community members annually, with average weekly participation of 35–45 singers and audiences of 140–500 per performance, including multiple sold-out events. Participants report measurable increases in social connection, reduced isolation, cultural belonging, and emotional wellbeing, outcomes aligned with research on the neurological and psychological benefits of collective music-making.
This model positions the organization for sustainable growth and scalability, as funding and leadership capacity expands alongside programming. By investing in both artistic and organizational infrastructure, the Latinx Choral Project is building a durable, community-rooted institution that strengthens Portland’s cultural ecosystem while advancing equitable access to the arts.
