A Season of Firsts: Singing our way into fall.

The first rehearsals of a new season are always a little bit like the first day of school—nervous energy, fresh notebooks (or in this case, choir binders), and the giddy anticipation of what’s ahead. This year, the Latinx Choral Project kicked off rehearsals, and wow—what a start!

The room was buzzing with a mix of new and familiar faces, and the energy was contagious. People came ready to sing, ready to connect, and ready to dream big with us. We read through music, shared ideas, and already started imagining the magic that’s about to unfold. I left rehearsal with a smile that didn’t quit.

And we have plenty to be smiling about. On the horizon:

Las Posadas with Milagro Theater – a chance to bring cherished tradition to life in December.

Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in October – yes, we’ll be part of Esperanza Spalding’s concert downtown (pinch me, please!).

Cantar con los Reyes in January – our winter finale, centering the joy and wisdom of community singing.

And before all that—our first choir social at Sellwood Park this weekend. Because nothing bonds a group like singing and snacks.

Meanwhile, the Revels Midwinter rehearsals are also underway for this year’s Scottish-themed show at the Scottish Rite downtown. My children’s choir and teen chorus came out strong from the very first rehearsal. They’re learning parts with ease (I’m almost afraid to say it out loud in case I jinx it). But I’ll take the good omen—this year is already shaping up to be musically rich and deeply rewarding.

On top of the choir work, my private studio continues to grow. New students are joining every week, each one bringing their curiosity and courage to discover their authentic voice. Teaching voice is one of my favorite things because it’s never just about notes and technique—it’s about people. I get to help uncover what’s been holding someone back, then watch as they step into confidence. It’s equal parts music lesson and therapy session. Honestly, it’s the best two-for-one deal you’ll ever get for your emotional well-being. (And let’s face it, scales are cheaper than therapy bills!)

As I sit back and take stock, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. The choirs, the rehearsals, the laughter, the brave young singers, and the seasoned voices coming together—it all makes me think: this is exactly where I’m supposed to be right now.

So here’s to fresh starts, bold music-making, and the gift of singing our way into fall. If the beginning is any indication, this is going to be a truly special season.
